Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
The couple confront the kind of problems that come with most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.
